We are more than just Asian American and Pacific Islanders. We hold multiple identities beyond our ethnic identities. We come from rich and diverse communities, each with its unique culture and heritage. We have our own individual lived experiences that shape the stories only we can tell through our own voices. Our multiple identities, individual experiences, and unique stories make up the threads that intersect and weave our AAPI experiences together like a colorful tapestry that illuminates what it truly means to be Asian American and Pacific Islander.
Please join APARC for our 4th annual AAPI Leadership Summit: Weaving a Tapestry of Identities, on Saturday, February 15! "Weaving a Tapestry of Identities" spotlights our intersecting identities that enrich our collective communities. We draw from intersectionality to make sense of the complex identities and experiences AAPIs embody. We endeavor to create a more nuanced understanding of our racial and ethnic identities by focusing on the ways our differences and individual experiences strengthen us.
Programming and Logistics
The entire event will take place in Bruininks Hall, beginning in Room 312 for the Welcome and Keynote Address. Registration will take place from 10AM - 10:30AM, which will allow you time to grab a light breakfast and situate yourself before the event begins. The Keynote Address by Dr. Juliana Hu Pegues will begin at 11:00 AM.
During the lunch hour we will have several activities including:
- A formal recognition of the recipients of the 2020 AANAPISI Scholarship
- The “Tapestry of Identities” activity, which will take place during the entire event, wherein attendees can write their identities weave them into a larger frame. This tapestry, comprising the various identities and experiences of the attendees, will then be installed as a piece of community art in the APARC space.
- A photo booth where attendees can get a FREE professional headshot. While there is no dress code for this event, we encourage business casual.
Transportation and Parking
If you are taking the METRO Green Line, you will get off at the East Bank Station on Washington Avenue and walk 5-7 minutes west to Bruininks Hall.
If you are driving and parking, the closest ramp to Bruininks Hall is the Weisman Art Museum Garage, and will cost around $11. The next closest parking ramp is the East River Road Garage behind Memorial Union, which will cost around $7. There is metered parking scattered through the University of Minnesota as can be found on the MPLS Parking App, and the closest free parking is in the nearby Dinkytown neighborhood (approximately a 10 minute walk), although please note that parking is very competitive in this area.
Keynote
We are excited to hear and learn from our keynote speaker, Dr. Juliana Hu Pegues! Dr. Pegues is a writer, artist, and Assistant Professor in the Department of American Indian Studies and faculty in the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Minnesota.
