Meet Our Student Coordinators! 2018-2019

Maya Thariani (she, her, hers)

Hi! I’m Maya Thariani and I’m a second year student! I’m in Carlson, and still trying to figure out exactly what I want my major to be. I’m originally from Omaha, Nebraska, and am mixed race, half Pakistani and half white. I wish I could speak the language, but unfortunately all I can understand in Urdu are insults and “how are you?” I love to read, and am hoping to start a cultural book club, so hit me up if you’re interested. I’m excited to be a part of the peer mentor program, and am looking forwards to doing some great things this year.

Shouazong Hang (she, her, hers)

Hello! My name is Shouazong Hang. I am an upcoming freshman and I plan on studying Psychology. I have held a position as both a co-chair and a communications lead in a group called Youth Executive Board (YEB). YEB really helped me by teaching me about educational equity, racial and cultural understanding and leadership. I definitely plan on being a part of social justice-based groups at the U of M this year. Besides social justice, I really love painting, hiking and photography. I also really value self-love and self-care! I would also consider myself an outgoing introvert since I love meeting new people, but it really burns me out. I look forward to seeing everyone at ASPIRE!

Pajar Lee (she, her, hers)

Pajar Lee is a Hmong American gal who will be a senior in the Fall of 2018 majoring in Family Social Science with a minor in Leadership. She loves being a student at the University of MN Twin Cities because of all of the people she has met and all that she has learned so far. Coming to the U has provided her with so many great opportunities such as being a part of strong and beautiful communities. A community she is highly involved with is the Hmong Minnesota Student Association (HMSA) on campus. One day, she hopes to become a family/couples therapist and work with nonprofit organizations to create better support and resources for all people, especially underrepresented communities. During her leisure time, some of the things she likes to do are play sports such as tennis and soccer with her friends and family, sing, and read fiction novels. She is so excited for what’s to come for her as she continues her life journey and finishes her last year as an undergrad student.

Karly Oak (she, her, hers)

Hello! My name is Karly Oak, and I am a Junior for this academic school year. I am a Korean-American adoptee with a major in Biology, Society, and the Environment in the College of Liberal Arts. I had previously served on board as the Activities Coordinator for the Asian-America Student Union, and I am currently volunteering at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Having found a welcoming community my first year in college I hope to be able to create similar environments for others this year. In my free time I love drawing, puns, and reading a variety of books.

Megan Sugaste (she, her, hers)

Kumusta ang lahat! I'm Megan, I'm a proud Filipina/ Californian! I'll be a 4th year Psychology student this year, and I just finished up my Product Design minor. I hope to work in Interior Design before grad school, then become a counselor. I currently serve as the Secretary of Delta Phi Omega Sorority Inc. (DPO) as well as on the auxiliary board. Since I'm a long ways from home I'm all about helping people feel welcome and at home. Food is one of my love languages, so I love sharing a meal as well as stories. I just adopted a 4 month puppy and he's pretty much my son. I can't wait to help make the U a more welcoming and colorful campus! I look forward to us all growing and learning together!
