Required Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled as a full time undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to manage group dynamics and facilitate dialogues

  • Possess a strong understanding of issues regarding social justice, intersectionality, oppression, and inequity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience serving in Pacific Islander (PI) student communities or other leadership positions with PI students
  • Prefer an upper level (2nd year or higher) undergraduate student
  • Hold a cumulative GPA of at least 2.70 and in good academic standing
  • Experience in educational, cultural, and identity based event planning
  • Experience in student leadership, student support, multicultural identity development
  • Passionate about empowering future generations of AAPI students
  • Able to be employed for full academic year 2021-2022

About the Job
The Asian Pacific American Resource Center (APARC) is committed to supporting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students thrive at the University of Minnesota. The position will have a vital role in working with APARC staff to develop, implement, and coordinate the Intersectional Identities Dialogue Program with an intentional focus on Pacific Islander identities and student communities. The Intersectional Identities Dialogue Program serves to support students in exploring and understanding the many identities and experiences they hold as AAPI students. Intersectionality, a term developed by professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, refers to the convergence of multiple social identities, including race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, religion, ability, among other identity categories. The goal of the program is to foster positive growth and development of students with their own identities through their experiences as AAPI students.

The position will be responsible for organizing engaging activities such as social engagements, discussions, presentations, and/or workshops that are related to affirming Pacific Islander identities, experiences, and fostering community for students. The position will work closely with APARC staff to plan activities, facilitate programming, and continuously develop the program to support students.  In addition, the position is responsible for supporting the resource center as noted in the position duties and responsibilities.

To support CODVID-19 safety measures, the position will be a hybrid position. Candidates must be available in-person to staff the front desk during APARC hours of operations - which will be a shared schedule with APARC staff and other student workers. Open to coordinating staffing schedules to fit class schedules. Other APARC responsibilities that do not require in-person support can be completed remotely with supervisor guidance. The position may also require some in-person evening and weekend hours depending on student programming and event scheduling, which will be discussed in advance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Intersectional Identities Dialogue Program activities to educate and support Pacific Islander student experiences
  • Research and gather information about Pacific Islander topics and experiences
  • Meet 1on1 with APARC Graduate Assistant or staff for support with program planning, implementation, and communication to students for program participation
  • Lead and facilitate Intersectional Identities Dialogue Program activities
  • Model positive and inclusive behavior, and support students in the program with informal mentorship and resources
  • Maintain program feedback and student evaluations with program participation
  • Attend campus and community sponsored programs, events, and lectures related to intersectionality and social justice
  • Staff front desk, welcome, and ensure proper sign-in of students and visitors to the center
  • Answer questions and direct resources for students and visitors
  • Monitor activities and ensure safe space of the center
  • Manage conference room schedule
  • Assist with checking in and out materials for patrons of the APARC Resource Library 
  • Assist with student recruitment, marketing, and presentations of events and activities
  • Assist with APARC events and activities including setup and clean up
  • Assist, facilitate, and/or engage with students during APARC events and activities
  • Represent APARC at university events and activities
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

The position pays $15/hour with 10-12 hours per week. Anticipated start date is Oct. 4, 2021 or after. Anticipated end date is the last day of spring semester with potential to continue the position for the following academic year.
