Join the APARC student staff team! Student Coordinators are integral team members who are in charge of running the ASPIRE Peer Mentorship Program. 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled as a full time undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota
  • Ability to manage group dynamics and facilitate dialogues
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and relationship building skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Commitment to year-long employment for the position

  • Possess a strong understanding of issues regarding social justice, intersectionality, oppression, and inequity

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Upper level (3rd year or higher) undergraduate student
  • Hold a cumulative GPA of at least 2.70 and in good academic standing
  • Experience serving in AAPI leadership positions and working with AAPI students
  • Experience in educational, cultural, and identity based event planning
  • Experience in student recruitment, outreach, marketing, and social media
  • Passionate about empowering future generations of AAPI students
  • Able to be employed for full academic year 2020-2021

 

 

About the Job

The APARC Student Coordinators will assist professional staff in the management, implementation, and coordination of the Asian American Pacific Islander Students Promoting Inspiration, Resilience, and Empowerment (ASPIRE) Peer Mentoring Program. The ASPIRE program is designed to assist first year, second year, and newly transferred Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students in acclimating to campus, increasing academic success, developing leadership and professional skills, and cultivating a sense of community. Student Coordinators are tasked with organizing monthly educational discussions, presentations, and/or workshops that are related to personal, academic, and professional development of new students, with a special attention to dimensions of race, ethnicity, and culture of AAPI identities and experiences. Student Coordinators are also tasked with training peer mentors on important skills and knowledge relevant to mentorship of AAPI student mentees. Student Coordinators are expected to work and maintain consistent office hours in APARC. Student Coordinators may also be tasked with opening and closing APARC. In addition, Student Coordinators serve as representatives of APARC.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Program and Event Planning
    • Organize monthly dialogues on topics related to AAPI identity, history, and culture
    • Plan monthly social and community building events for mentors/mentees
    • Organize logistics, workshops, and activities for a winter retreat for mentors/mentees
    • Organize logistics, workshops, and activities for ASPIRE’s new mentee orientation, mentee-mentor bonding week, and other structured relationship building events
    • Facilitate dialogues and manage group dynamics

 

  • Training and Leadership Development
    • Assist in developing curriculum and activities for mentor training
    • Co-facilitate training sessions for mentors
    • Demonstrate professionalism and provide leadership for mentors and mentees

 

  • Logistics
    • Assist with recruitment and selection of mentors and mentees
    • Assist in organizing mentor-mentee pairings and families
    • Familiarize mentors and mentees with support resources (academic, financial, career), buildings/facilities, and campus culture

 

  • Advising
    • Connect mentors and mentees with on-campus and off-campus student involvement opportunities
    • Conduct 1on1 meetings with assigned mentors on semesterly basis

 

  • Communications and Outreach
    • Maintain consistent weekly communication with mentors through social media
    • Send weekly newsletters with helpful information, resources, and events to mentees and mentors

 

  • Miscellaneous
    • Actively attend and engage in all trainings, retreats, and meetings associated with the Asian Pacific American Resource Center
    • Hold office hours and staff APARC front desk
    • Meet 1on1 biweekly with the APARC Program Coordinator
    • Assist the APARC staff in signature APARC programs and events such as Leadership Summit and Speaker Series
    • Serve as a social and professional resource for mentors and mentees
    • Attend weekly Student Coordinator & APARC Program Coordinator team meetings
    • Cultivate a friendly and welcoming environment for students at APARC
    • Serve as a representative of APARC to other university departments, student organizations, and off campus organizations
    • Model positive and inclusive behavior
    • Assist in additional duties as assigned

 

The position pays $11/hour. The position is anticipated to start within training on July 13th with approximately 10-15 hours per week until the school year begins. Summer hours are potentially semi-flexible to be for evenings or weekends. During Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters, the position will work 10-12 hours per week. Anticipated end date is May 12, 2021 with potential option of rehire for the 2021-2022 academic year.
